BoardGameVp: Privacy Policy

Effective date: 24 September 2026

Developer: Algoris

BoardGameVp ("the app") shows victory point (VP) statistics for board games, calculated from plays logged publicly on BoardGameGeek (BGG). This policy explains what data the app uses, where it goes and what control you have over it.

Summary

  • The app has no account and no servers of its own. The only data the developer receives are crash and error reports (Firebase Crashlytics) that help fix problems. The app does not add what you enter in it to these reports.
  • The app downloads its settings (such as how often statistics are refreshed) from Firebase Remote Config.
  • Everything you enter (your BGG username, friends' BGG usernames, your buy/sell list) is stored only on your device.
  • To show statistics, the app talks directly to BoardGameGeek. Purchases and app updates are handled by Google Play.
  • The app contains no advertising and no analytics, and does not access your location, contacts, camera, microphone or files.

Data stored on your device

DataWhy
Your BGG username (optional)to show your own results next to the community statistics and to compare with friends
BGG usernames of friends you add (optional), with the first and last name shown in their public BGG profileto compare your results with theirs and to show who is who on the friends list
Cached statistics, game details (title, player count) and game thumbnailsto show statistics quickly and limit requests to BGG
Your buy/sell list with last seen offers and prices (optional)to notify you about new GeekMarket offers and price drops
List of games you have checked"Recently checked" list and the free-games limit

This data stays in the app's private storage. It is deleted when you remove it in the app, clear the app's data or uninstall the app. If Android backup is turned on in your device settings, Android may include this data in your device backup stored in your Google account; the developer has no access to it.

Sharing statistics

When you tap Share on a game's statistics screen, the app draws the statistics shown on the screen (game title, VP statistics, histogram and, if shown, your own average) into an image. The image is saved in the app's private cache, where the next share overwrites it, and is passed to the app you choose in Android's share sheet. The app itself sends it nowhere; what happens next is up to you and the app you shared it with. The image contains no BGG usernames.

Data sent to BoardGameGeek

The app sends requests directly to the BoardGameGeek XML API (boardgamegeek.com) and loads game images from BGG's image servers. Depending on what you do, these requests contain:

  • game titles you search for and game identifiers,
  • your BGG username and the BGG usernames of friends you add (to fetch their logged plays, game ratings and the name shown in their profile, and, if you choose to import friends, your friends list on BGG),
  • technical data that is part of every internet request, such as your IP address, and an app identifier (app name and developer contact) required by BGG's API terms.

The app processes public play data returned by BGG only to calculate statistics; it stores the resulting numbers, not other users' play records. BoardGameGeek processes these requests under its own privacy policy: https://boardgamegeek.com/privacy. BoardGameVp is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by BoardGameGeek. Links in the app (e.g. to BGG or GeekMarket offers) open in your browser, where the website's own policies apply.

Purchases (Google Play)

The optional one-time purchase is processed by Google Play. The developer does not receive your payment details. The app only checks with Google Play whether the purchase was made. Google Play and the Google Play Billing library included in the app may process data in connection with the purchase under Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

App updates (Google Play)

When you open the app, it asks Google Play whether a newer version is available (Google Play In-App Updates). If there is one, Google Play offers the update and downloads and installs it. The developer does not receive anything from this check; Google Play handles it under Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Crash and error reports (Firebase Crashlytics)

To find and fix errors, the app uses Firebase Crashlytics, a service provided by Google. When the app crashes, and at the start of app sessions, Crashlytics sends to Google:

  • the crash stack trace and the state of the app at the moment of the crash,
  • reports about errors the app handled without crashing (for example when BoardGameGeek does not respond or refuses a request), with technical details: which part of the app was affected, the HTTP status code, the public BGG identifier of the game and short technical log entries (such as the address path of a retried request, without its parameters),
  • device and app metadata, such as device model, Android version, app version and free memory,
  • a random installation identifier generated by Crashlytics (used to count how many users a crash affects) and session information, such as when the app was brought to the foreground.

The app does not add your BGG username, your friends, your lists, the titles you search for or anything else you enter in the app to these reports. Errors caused only by your device being offline are not reported. The developer uses them only to improve the app's stability, based on the developer's legitimate interest in providing a working app. Google processes this data on the developer's behalf, transfers it encrypted (HTTPS) and keeps crash reports and related identifiers for 90 days. More information: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

App settings (Firebase Remote Config)

Some settings of the app (how long downloaded statistics are kept before refreshing, the pause between requests to BoardGameGeek, the number of free games and free friends) can be changed by the developer without an app update. To get them, the app contacts Firebase Remote Config (a Google service) at most about once an hour. According to Firebase documentation, this request includes technical data such as country and language code, time zone, Android version, the app's Firebase identifier and package name, and a random Firebase installation identifier. The settings are the same for all users; they are not used to identify or profile you.

Notifications and background checks

If you add games to the buy/sell list, the app checks BGG for new offers about every 6 hours in the background and can show notifications. If you turn on "Notify me when a friend wants to play a game I own" in your profile, the app also checks about every 12 hours, in the background, your BGG collection and the public want-to-play lists of your friends (this sends your BGG username and your friends' BGG usernames to BoardGameGeek, like the other requests) and remembers the last seen list of each friend on your device. Notifications are optional and can be turned off in Android settings. They are generated on your device and are not sent to the developer.

Permissions

  • Internet: to communicate with BoardGameGeek, Google Play (purchases, updates) and Firebase (Crashlytics, Remote Config).
  • Notifications (optional): for buy/sell alerts and for friends' want-to-play alerts.
  • Permissions added by Android libraries for Google Play purchases and background work (e.g. network state, running scheduled work after restart). The app does not request location permission.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Your rights

Data stored on your device is under your control: edit or delete your username, friends and lists in the app, or clear the app's data. Crash and error reports and settings requests are linked only to random installation identifiers, not to your name or BGG account; if you want to object to their processing or ask about them, contact the developer. For data processed by BoardGameGeek, please use their privacy tools. If you are in the EU/EEA, you have the right to access, rectify and erase your data, to object to processing based on legitimate interest, and to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. For any questions, contact algoris.eu@gmail.com.

Changes to this policy

If the way the app handles data changes, this policy will be updated and the effective date above will change.
